Reading strengthens the core skills that 11 Plus students need for success. It builds a wide vocabulary, improves spelling, and helps children understand complex sentences — all essential for comprehension papers and creative writing tasks. Regular reading also trains the brain to concentrate for longer periods, follow detailed information, and make inferences, which are key abilities tested in the 11 Plus. Because books expose children to different characters, settings, and ideas, they naturally learn how to recognise themes, predict outcomes, and understand emotions — the same thinking skills used in high‑level exam questions.
Reading also boosts confidence and creativity. Children who read widely develop a stronger sense of story structure, which helps them write more imaginative and organised compositions.
